Trying to Do Christmas
I’ve pulled all my decorations out, and am trying to get it all put up.
In other years, I’ve tried to get as much of it done while the girls were in school. I thought that I could get it done that way this year too – especially because even J is in full day’s this year.
I normally put up my decorations after American Thanksgiving, but this year has been so crazy busy, that here we are on the first of December, and I’m not ready yet. To make matters worse, we’ve had so much snow, and have been so unprepared for it (as a city) that school got cancelled for Monday and Tuesday this week. Wednesday and Thursday were short days (the kids got dismissed early) because it was parent-Teacher Interviews. And today….you’ll never believe it. Today was a Professional Day. Unbelievable!!!!
The kids were begging me to set up the decorations today, and I figured that if I told them that they’d have to clean the house first, that it might put them off and I could do the decorations next week. NOPE! Didn’t work, BUT I DID GET MY HOUSE CLEANED!
So, we’ve heaved all the boxes up stairs, and I have to get the tree ready so that they can hang their own ornaments up tomorrow.
We have a Tradition in our family. I love traditions. I love old ones, and I love making new ones. One of our traditions is that each of the kids get a new ornament every year. We’ve been doing this since I was pregnant with Geli. Her first one says, “Coming soon – Christmas 1996” She’s received another one every year since then. One reason that we started doing this is so that when they leave home, they will have about 20 ornaments to take with them. Just a little something from home! A memory that can continue to grow every year. We try to get an ornament that was relevant to that child for that past year! Something little, but still fun!
What kind of traditions do you have in your family?

while i like the tradition of new ornaments every year, keep in mind that J.’s spouse may not like it when they get married and he takes a bunch of old ornaments with him. H. & P. both had their collection that they brought when they got married. while i didn’t really care either way, my sis-in-law was not a big fan. if she could have, i think she would have thrown them out. not quite designer tree material, you know?
i’m looking to starting some new traditions this year.

Well, To be completely honest – I might not have been thrilled at first either. Having said that, I would LOVE to have old ornaments from his or my childhood, now!
Even if they don’t want them when they move out, either I get to keep them, and remember or I keep them for a few years unti their “Worth & Value” goes up. I find it amazing how things that I would have thought were junk when I was 20 are so much more valuable and special now that I’m past 30. And even if J and his wife don’t appreciate them, maybe their kids (if they have any) will want them when they grow up. Who know!

Hey Patti,
Hi from Bangkok, Last night I went to the market and I saw some bags very similar to the ones that you make. They also had some skirts that were part regular knitting and part matted. They look really cool. I did not have my camera with me because the battery needs recharging but if I get an opportunity I will take a picture.
By the way I still have some stuff of Jonathans that he did when he was little. If you are interested.
Blessings Mom
