Incentive to Keep Going
We’ve done 4 full days of this new eating plan, and most of Friday as well (only breakfast was off plan - but that was before we knew all of J’s intolerances). I’ve both surprised and stressed myself out more thatn a few times.
It’s been easier than I thought it would be in some ways, and harder in other (the two sides again - story of my life). We’ve been eating really good (all of us), and I’d love to be able to say that I’m already seeing improvements, but they are in things that you really have to take notice of. For example, yesterday after school we walked home, and Jeremy held my hand, and walked beside me the whole entire way (Yah, all 7 minutes of it) and when we got about half way, there is a little bench off to the side, and my stomach was cramping, so I needed to sit. He just sat there beside me and we talked. I must have asked 3 different times if he was ready to finish walking home, and he kept saying that he wasn’t. When he was finally ready, I offered my hand again, he took it, and calmly walked along beside me the rest of the way.
That may seem like something so stupid and insignificant to you, but he’s never been in a peaceful enough state to just wlk slowly beside me. Normally, he is running ahead of me at a billion miles an hour, and touching every - single - thing that we come across, and we’ve never just sat on a bench and talked. We must have sat there for about 4 or 5 minutes.
Then, when we were making dinner, he helped Jon to peel some potatoes for dinner, and then helped him to cut up some broccoli and cauliflower, and even helped to set the table. All of this done happily and calmly. It was amazing. He stuck with each of the tasks until they were finished, and we didn’t have to ask or remind him to keep to task or anything. It was amazing (at least to us)
Now, I’m not saying that he’s flipped a switch, and everything has changed, but these were just two positive things that we’ve noticed. He is still an overly impulsive little boy, who can’t seem to keep his hands to himself, and even got in trouble yesterday at school and had to write a note to the teacher, but Hey, to see him do those two things was so encouraging.
I’ve been keeping a log of what he’s been eating, and I think that he’s getting most of his daily reccommended amounts of stuff. Obviously, there will be things that I miss or don’t get enough of, and that’s where a vitamin comes in. I haven’t gotten aorund to getting those yet, and I need to….seeing as he’s not in to see the Naturopath until April 19th.
We’ve made kamut pancakes with egg whites (no yolks) and water (instead of milk) and while they definately don’t taste like white flour pncakes with whole eggs and milk; they were not too bad. The hard part, was finding something that he’s eat on top of his pancakes. Xan and Geli will eat pure Maple syurp - J is stil not far enough removed from the “normal” food and he thinks that the Maple Syrup tastes gross. So, he had applesauce with his pancakes. Weird in my estimation, but he thought it was okay.
I even made Yorkshire Pudding (Turnovers - I think they are called by some) last night for dinner with egg white (no yolk) and oat milk (instead of regular milk) and spelt flour. They were DELICIOUS, and you couldn’t even taste a difference.
It’s been interesting trying to make certain that his (and ours) diet is varied enough, and yet full enough of the right things to fuel his and our bodies.
I stressed about lunches for the first two days, until I’ve decided that if he has a good breakfast with a good amount of protein, that I’m not going to freak out if he won’t eat a hunk of meat or cheese for lunch. I gave him nuts today, and 2 veggies and 2 fruits and a kamut/spelt tortilla toasted and broken up into chips. He then has the protein, the fruits and veggies, and even a grain. There is oil in the tortilla, to include some fats, and we are good to go.
I am still going to track what and how much he eats, probably until we go to see the Naturopath, and then I’ll see what she says about it all and see if I can ease up on myself, or if I need to continue being so anal.
It is surprising what you can come up with when you think about and try. Along with the Yorkshire Pudding, I made Pork Chops with gravy, and mashed potatoes. Instead of using butter and milk to smooth out the potatoes, we just mashed them really well, using some of the potato water from when I drained them from boiling. No Dairy of any kind, and they were still smooth and delicious. Even the gravy was made with oil and spelt flour and the scrapings from the bottom of the pan that I cooked the meat in. It wasn’t what we normal have (Cream of Mushroom Soup), but it was still pretty good.
I find the hardest thing to come up with is snacks. We are so used to having snacks, and I guess in some ways, I’m trying to break us of the habit that snacks need to be hard, crunchy, wheat based products. Go for a piece of fruit or some veggies or nuts. Yesterday I made a smoothy using frozen peaches, a banana, 2 tablespoons of Organic Plain Yogurt, ice and water. It was really good, and while J didn’t have any (He was eating something else) the girls liked it. I guess the one I was most surprised about was Geli. She is struggling the most with this new “Eating Plan”. She’s finding it the hardest to change, and to try new things. So I was happy that she liked it. Her comment was, “This tastes just like a smoothy.” Well, DUH! It is a smoothy, just a really healthy one.
I only hope that things continue to go as well as they have. I’ll keep ya updated, and if you didn’t really care about all this, well…….uh…..I’m sorry! Come back tomorrow and I’ll be talking about something different………….
EDITED TO ADD:
Picked Jeremy up from school today, and he apparently had a VERY GOOD DAY. He wasn’t talked to once in his gym class - apparently that’s worthy enough to be mentioned, and had a very good morning AND afternoon. It’s unusual that he has both parts of the day good. Usually the mornings are better than the afternoon…..so again, more incentive to keep on going. It’s so nice to hear some positive feedback, hopefully it starts coming in more often.

no… please keep talking about this! I am so glad that you have seen a difference in JJ already! I haven’t too much with Hailey but…..she has cheated SO much! it is hard for just 1 to change while the rest are eating all the things she wants! I can’t wait to get the rest of the girls tested to see if they have similar allergies. I also find snacks the hardest part….something to fill her up and not wig her out!! I think I should start keep a food diary for her too!

Well, I haven’t gotten the other kids tested yet, but they are on the same diet as J is, basically.
I’m not as freaky about them having exactly what he is having, but they are not allowed to have sugar or dairy or wheat.
I didn’t think it was fair to him, and seeing as they would probably have issues with those things, I just figured that I’d give them a head start of getting used to eating like this so that when they went in, #1 they’d be healthier, and #2 they’d be ahead of the game, and maybe then they wouldn’t have quite the amount of intolerances that J has.
All for one and one for all. That’s the way we are playing this game here at our house. Makes for everybody to be happier and healthier.

Thanks for the encouragement yesyerday. Things are much better today. I enjoy reading about this stuff too. I really think that I should take my oldest son in for testing, that may explin a few of his issues. It is neat to know how well it is working and how quickly too. Keep sharing!
