Debbie’s Update from Friday June 22nd
I went and saw Chris this morning. I think he was a little surprised when he opened his eyes at 8Am and there I was. He sort of blinked a few times. He said he slept well. His arm had been up on a pillow all night, so he said his shoulder was sore. I asked him if he needed it massaged. He looked at me like I was crazy, “That would probably hurt more”, he said. He just yanked on the pillow and got himself sorted out.
He figured breakfast would be coming anytime soon but was pretty thirsty. I went and got him some milk. He drank about 3 milks before breakfast even came. He kept saying, “I could probably drink a hundred of these.” I guess he was really thirsty. He also drank a glass of water and a cranberry juice. Which could explain this next story…
On of of my trips to get him a drink, I cam back into the room and started to walk past the curtain into his area. “HOLD UP! He says. I was, Like…”Why? What’s up?” Then I realized he was using his very high tech bathroom system (a bottle.) Whoops, Sorry Chris. I quickly flung the curtain closed and waited for him to finish. I took the bottle from him to put it up on the shelf (Who wouldn’t love to keep your bodily fluids so close to you?!) And I said, “Whoa, I’ll switch this one, It’s getting really full.” And Chris replied, “That’s the first time I’ve used it. It was empty.
” “Well then,” I exclaimed, “YOU must have been pretty full.” Maybe you can drink a hundred milks, Chris, but you can’t keep them forever.
Breakfast was still delayed and Chris seemed to be wondering if he would actually be getting anything to eat. I guess the usally come around 8:30. So at 8:45, I went and heated up some organic, naturopath-approved, porridge and berries that I brought in case his breakfast was disgusting.
He ate the whole bowl. He told the nurse that it was his pre-breakfast. I asked him if he was a hobbit. (Have you seen Lord of the Rings or read the books?)
While we waited for his hospital breakfast, I mentioned that I had been running yesterday with a friend who is training for a race on Sunday, so we took the run quite a bit faster than we normally would. I told Chris how sore I was and he went on to explain, that when ever you change pace you are going to change the way you use your muscles. I told him where I was sore, and he went off on which muscles those were and how to stretch them. So I was there beside his bed, getting coached on how to stretch properly. Thank you, Dr. Chris.
Breakfast finally came and man, did it look gross. The only thing that looked good was the hard boiled egg. Mushy, butter sogged toast and and some nasty, cream of wheat-looking porrigde. Not so appetizing. I had brought in some toast and casher butter. I asked Chris if he would rather have a fresh peice of toast. (They have a toaster, microwave and fridge in the kitchen area…I can’t remember if there was a stove.) I went and cooked up a piece and we put the cashew butter on it. Chris wasn’t sure if he would like it, but he said it was actually pretty good. Chris is a pretty good eater. He doesn’t eat alot of junk. So I bet if you took some home cooked food, he would probably appreciate it.
Jose, Chris’ nurse for today, checked his temp, blood pressure and heart rate and said they all seem good. Blood pressure was a little high but not too much.
Chris has his mp3 player and we spent a long time going through many songs on there. He showed me a bunch of bands that he really likes and told me lots about them, where they are from and all sorts of fact type info. So we just sat there and shared the earphones and he would sing along with all the lyrics he thought were hilarious. Maybe I should give him some vocal coaching, since he’d already given me the Streching 101 course.
I asked him if he knew where Mom was headed to day and he said Romania. I said no, somewhere hotter. “Oh, Fiji” he said. Momma said goodbye to him yesterday. Her and Nina have been going in almost everyday, so It sort of feels like we need to fill those visiting times while Momma is away.
I left and Chris was going to get a sponge bath. He didn’t seem to mind. And he needed it. Just as I left he was like, “Whew, I stink. Where’s that deoderant? I guess I’ll wait till after my bath to put more on.” Nice to see his sense on hygiene is still intact.
Love you lots, Chris. we still continue to pray Shalom over you. Nothing missing, Nothing broken. Completeness for you, body, mind and spirit.
(PS. Special thanks to all who are making the exra effort to go even further to see Chris. It means so much to know he’s got people with him, supporting him and Nina…and supporting us. Thanks. Love, Debbie)

It has only been 4 days since we were last able to get in to see Chris but what a change even in that time. He seems to be(in true Kennedy fashion) adapting to where he is..and by that I mean more than knowing the layout of the floor he’s on. Although I am sure he still has those emotional moments, what we saw was the Christopher who had the quick quip, dry humor and a genuine appreciation for that fact that family and friends were taking time to be with him. And thank the Lord above for an earthly father such as Mark…the love, caring and devotion is inspiring to see. Chris told us in great detail about his work in the oilfields, and his short term recall seems to improve daily. And I know I shouldn’t be surprised at that…our God is an awesome God! If anyone goes in to see him, try and plan it around mealtime…he’s more than generous about wanting to share his’wonderful’hospital cuisine! As Uncle Dan would say, we love you buddy!!
