Updates, Updates and More Updates…….
I(Patti) went in to see Chris on Tuesday. I showed up about 10:30am, and he was already up and in his wheelchair, and the nurses were just finishing bangading his arm and leg. I had brought a large container of watermelon, and when he saw it he asked if he could have some right away as he was DYING of thirst. He scarfed down a bunch of it, and then asked for some water as well. He had a physio class starting at 11:30am, and I teased him that he might need to bring his “bottle” with him ’cause he’d had so much fluid – he’d be needing it half way through the class.
We killed the rest of the time before his class started by filling up his jug with water and ice, and getting his trach bandage changed (it was wet ’cause he’d had a shower earlier that morning and they forgot to change it), and people watching……there are quite a few “characters” up in the TCU and there is always something or someone to watch and talk about.
It was finally time for the class, and so Chris wheeled himself down the hall, and I went out side to enjoy the sun – but it had hidden behind the clouds and smog. I sat outside for about 10 minutes until I was freezing, and then went back upstairs and waited in the main area until the class was done.
I went and found Chris in his room when I started to see people coming down the hallway, and we decided to eat lunch out in the main area. It’s neat to see how some of the people are so friendly and how they try to connect each other in to the group as a whole.
Lunch was disgusting…Chris couldn’t believe that they would try to serve Spaghetti sauce and meatballs over rice…..I have to admit – I tried it, and it was GROSS! He did eat all his salad and the dessert and it was a good thing that we had eaten the HUGE container of watermelon and celery that I’d brought ’cause the lunch nazi came over and wasn’t very happy that Chris hadn’t finished his Marinara and Rice, but she eased off when I explained that we’d eaten quite a bit of other stuff.
Chris was getting a bit tired (mostly his butt was tired and sore) at this point, and so we headed back to his room to hang out and rest. He kicked my butt in a game of checkers, and I tried to tidy/organize his tray and side table. We listened to some of his music….it’s….well……it’s interesting. Very unique!
It was nice to just talk to Chris and to hear and see how he’s getting better every time you go in. Nina showed up around 3pm, and I left. It was a pretty good day I think. He seemed to be in high spirits, and only said one kinda goofy or “off” comment. His head is definately clearing and you can hear more and more of “Chris” coming through.
Update from Marja
Jyrki and I(Marja) went to see Chris today. We were there about 4 hours. It was warm and sunny, and Chris wanted to be outside. He was already sitting in his wheelchair, so we went for a walk. Jyrki was pushing the wheelchair, and the next 2 hours, we walked around the hospital.
There’s some little shops and coffee shops etc. just couple blocks away. We also found a Christian bookstore, where we spent quite along time, just looking around. I offered to buy him a book, if he could find something that would intrest him, but he said that he probably can’t yet concentrate on reading a book. But he just liked to look aroud something different than those hospital walls all the time.
Isles at that store were so wide that we were able to go in with the wheelchair. He’s bad leg has to be straight , he can’t have it bent, so we needed wider space to be able to move aroud, because his leg is sticking so far out of the chair. Then we went back to his room.
I had brougt him a home cooked meal, some chicken wings and stuff, and he seemed to enjoy that. we had some good Tim Horton donuts for dessert, I enjoyed that a lot.
Just after he finished eating, this horrible smell started to come from the next bed. There’s 3 other men in the same room. Whatever that man leaked out, sure was smelling bad. Luckily Chris was still in his wheelchair, so that we could leave the room, and do it with speed. Chris said aloud, “That kind of smell could kill cattle.” We tried to go back to the room in few minutes, but the smell was still so bad that we decided to go outside. So we went and sat close to the waterfalls on the hospital grounds. Even there, Chris was still thinking of that smell, and how good it was that it didnt happen during the night, when he was in bed, beside that man.
Chris seems to be adapting to this UBC hospital. Its not the nicest place to be. Lots of really old people, and lots of SMELLS… I just remembered a funny thing, when couple of days ago when we went to see him. He was looking at his arm, there’s some metal pieces pushing his skin up, and when you touch it, you can feel the hard metal under the skin.
He was thinking why that metal is under his skin, sometimes he still forgets what happened to his arm. So we told him again about the accident. Then he said that its actually really good thing to have that metal in my arm, because now I can hang notes to it with a magnet. Good thinking eh ?
We pray fast healing for Chris. He’s been so brave with all the big changes around him and in his life. We love him so much.
